In Our Own Backyard Well, its just about here. Yes, the Fall - TopicsExpress

In Our Own Backyard Well, its just about here. Yes, the Fall muzzle-loading season is October 18th and 19th, and the weather seems to be cooperating, too. The chillier temperatures are welcomed by the deer hunters. It means much less perspiration and chances are better of getting a good look at a deer before it picks up your scent. I always loved getting out in the woods this time of year when the leaves are starting to turn colors. I dont know. There is just a pleasant sereness, less bugs and mosquitoes, and youre less apt to meet up with a poisonous snake. Through the summer, it would have to be a dire emergency for me to venture into the deep woods because of the threat of snakebite, tick bite, and mosquito bites. This year, Kentucky has a bear season that opens to archery (including crossbow) on November 22nd and runs through the 30th. Firearm Season is December 13-15, and a quota hunt with dogs December 22-26. Ive heard people say that bear meat is good, but Ive never tried it, so I dont know. They were hunted to near extinction in our state, but through the years of having a closed season and wildlife officers cracking down on poaching, theyre making a comeback. Their populations are increasing and there have been sightings in both downtown Ashland, Huntington and Charleston, West Virginia, and in Portsmouth, Ohio. It seems that towns first encroached on their territories; now the bears are starting to encroach back! No unsecured (with a chain) garbage can is safe! While visiting with friends in the Smoky Mountains, my friend told me what happened to him when he first moved there. He and his wife were building a log cabin on a piece of land located on the side of one of the hills there. He purchased a 4-wheel drive Ford Bronco to help drag things up the hill before there was a passable road. He would park the Bronco at the foot of the hill and drive his car home. One evening, after work, he returned to the Bronco to find all four tires flattened. Upon further observation, he found bear claw marks all over where the bear (or bears) had mauled the vehicle. Inside, in plain view through the drivers side window, he saw what had caused the attack; a opened bag of beef jerky hed had with him the night before. The bears mustve really been mad at him for locking it inside. They exacted their revenge by biting through all four of his brand new off-road Michelins! As for small game, Rabbit and Quail Seasons are from November 1-7, then reopens November 10th and runs through January 31st. Grouse is the same, but its season ends February 28th. Also, someone told me the other day the sauger are starting to stack below the Greenup Dam. I can see why with the cooler temperatures weve been having. This might be a great development. Im going to have to launch Ol 63, my fishing boat, and find out! Had I not had to work last night, my buddy, Bill Vansickle, wanted to go this morning. If I didnt have to, I wouldve been right there with him! I look forward to fishing this winter and the smell of fresh sauger, saugeye, or walleye frying in the pan, a skillet of cornbread loaded down with fresh cows butter, and canned half-runner beans out of the garden that Mom and my brother, Jon, canned this year. I hope that you get the opportunity to get out and enjoy this beautiful cool weather were having. Despite having just rained, it doesnt feel too humid out, thank goodness! Personally, I like the hot weather. But there are some who have a hard time dealing with it, especially those with allergies and asthma. Im just content to deal with whatever kind of weather God gives us, however, I do deplore the cold and ice. Its the only thing about our area that I dont like - winter. Everyone have a great week. I think Ill mosey on over to Old-Fashioned Days and check out the antique tractors, grab a funnel cake and a candied apple or two. You never know who youll run into there. Last year I ran into a wall, not watching where I was going. God bless. Catfish
