In Reading, Pennsylvania, the city council relived the Charlie Brown Christmas special for real. Heavy rains kept them from cutting the big tree they’d planned to install downtown, so they put up a last minute replacement instead. It was a scrawny, spindly spruce with light strings hanging off it, and a lighted pretzel on top, in honor of all the local bakeries. So many residents complained that it was ugly, the city council president agreed to personally pay for a more impressive replacement. But some residents held a rally to defend the ugly tree and urge the city to keep it. Personally, I never thought it was such a bad little tree. Maybe all it needed was a little love. And maybe some mustard for the pretzel.
