In Riverside County, local fire departments are not only spreading word about the value of smoke detectors in saving lives, many are giving away them to seniors and low-income residents along with batteries. In some cases, they’re also installing them and changing the batteries. The Murrieta Fire Department makes such house calls every Friday afternoon to help seniors change their smoke alarm batteries. The service started several years ago after an elderly man trying to change a battery fell off his ladder and was severely injured, Fire Chief Matt Shobert said. “We don’t want our seniors hurting themselves,” Shobert said.
