In USA Weekend, Steven Spielberg is interviewed about his project of collecting and recording the stories of Holocaust survivors. The project is called Shoah which is another name for holocaust has resulted in 52,000 eyewitness accounts in 34 languages from residents in 58 countries. Mr. Spielberg says that this project he is convinced why God put him here to tell the stories of the who saw and experienced the madness of one man and who were able to come out alive. When I think about our Holocaust as African descent people however painful it was-it is important that we continue to speak about it, to never forget it and to never let America and the world forget it. The slaughter of millions of Jews was allowed in part by the silence of the world, the vilification of the Jews may have taken center stage in Hitlers Germany but it was supported by the world. This is equally true for the slave trade. No hand is clean. So we like the Jews must never cease to speak the horror of a time that saw millions of our mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers perish under this cruel and inhumane scourge -this Peculiar institution called slavery. We must pass that story on to our children and our children must pass that story on to their children and we must tell the story to a Nation that chooses to forget, to pretend that it never happened. History tends to repeat itself and it will surely repeat itself if we do not remain vigilant against hatred.
