In WarGames (1983), a young computer whiz kid (Matthew Broderick) accidentally taps into a top secret super-computer which has complete control over the U.S. nuclear arsenal. It challenges him to a game between America and Russia, and he innocently starts the countdown to World War III. The film also stars Dabney Coleman, John Wood, and Ally Sheedy. Roger Ebert gave the film four out of four stars, calling it an amazingly entertaining thriller and one of the best films so far this year, with a wonderful ending. WarGames was nominated for three Academy Awards — Best Cinematography (William A. Fraker), Sound (Michael J. Kohut, Carlos Delarios, Aaron Rochin, Willie D. Burton), and Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen (Lawrence Lasker, Walter F. Parkes). The Library now has the film available on blu-ray.
