In Yesterdays News: Queenie takes annual plunge 1,214 tickets sold, more than $9,000 raised Eryn Dion News Staff Writer #PHILLIPSTON — This year’s famed Queen Lake Ice-Out has come to an end, as the 8-foot-tall plywood statue “Queenie” broke through the ice at 5:06 p.m. Saturday. The Historical Society of Phillipston, which puts on the event, began selling raffle tickets in February, with “Queenie” taking up her post later that month. Participants had to guess the date, hour, minute and second the statue would plunge into the lake. According to Emelda Haughton, the society’s Ways and Means chairman, 1,214 tickets were sold, and more than 600 of those predicted the break occurring sometime in April. The first-place winner, Barbara Hastings of Vermont, was only 21 minutes off – a new Ice-Out record. “We’ve never had someone guess exactly,” said. Ms. Haughton. “But 21 minutes, that’s pretty close.” Ms. Hastings was awarded the hefty sum of $1,000 for her superior guessing skills and 23 other prizes were handed out to lucky participants who also selected April 5 as the date that “Queenie” would take the dive. Other guesses ran the gambit from February to even August, which Ms. Haughton attributes to this year’s particularly harsh winter. The fundraiser generated more than $9,000 in profit for the society. The group plans to use the money raised to build a new driveway and septic system for their museum, which changed locations last November.
