In a 1926 landmark case (Euclid v. Amber Realty), the Supreme Court upheld zoning ordinances first introduced in New York in 1916 that sought to separate lower-class fabric markets from upscale retailers on 5th Avenue, and also to reduce density. Combined with widespread use of automobiles, the result has been that society has become auto-dependent, segregated and more isolated. To a large degree, we have essentially developed cities around automobiles instead of people.
