In a multiparty democracy, the opposition and ruling party engage - TopicsExpress

In a multiparty democracy, the opposition and ruling party engage each other on national issue and at times come to a consensus on the way forward on issues that affect the lives of the people. In the case of Botswana, the ruling party prefers to reject everything that comes from the opposition and later adopt the same ideas that they had rejected at great cost and inconvenience due to the delay. Some of the most recent examples are given below; In February this year, I asked the Minister of Agriculture to state the causes of death to cattle that were given to the farmers of zone 6 and 7 during the restocking exercise. The reasons showed that the deaths were unavoidable and the farmers were not to blame. When I asked if the farmers will be compensated, the response was a flat NO. Government last month announced that the farmers will now be compensated but now have to prove cause of death, 5 months after the restocking exercise! In March of this year Arone Bagalatia presented a motion requesting that the students of Shakawe Senior Secondary, who had all failed their form 5 exams on account of the school opening late, be readmitted to different secondary schools. The response from the BDP was a big NO. Last week, Minister Masisi was in Shakawe to announce that the students will be readmitted in September. For many years we have been advising government against the decision to kill cattle in areas with Foot and Mouth outbreaks. The meat from such cattle is not poisonous for human consumption and the by-products like leather can be utilized. Only last week, the ministry of agriculture announced that such cattle will no longer be killed, after hundreds of farmers have been impoverished by the policy we advised against. The above suggest that the BDP suffers from a serious strain of paranoid disorder...
