In a recent US News and World Report article, the following was reported: By one measure, the government already plays an outsize role in our so-called free-market economy—and it has little to do with the recession. Economist Gary Shilling has calculated that 58 percent of the population is dependent on the government for major parts of their income, including teachers, soldiers, bureaucrats, and other government employees; welfare and Social Security recipients; government pensioners; public housing beneficiaries; and people who work for government contractors. By 2018, Shilling estimates, an astounding 67 percent of Americans could be dependent on the government for their livelihood. The implications arent comforting. My own guess-timate has been in excess of 50% for several years. The implications of this for liberty and freedom are very serious, as Americans are known to vote their pocketbook. Thus, we have voters approving construction of palaces of government like we have never seen, including 80 and 90 million dollar schools, courthouses, etc.. After all these voters do not really have to pay taxes. Their tax payments just go back into their own paychecks and their palaces. When this Ponzi scheme comes crashing down in the future Libertarians need to be ready to take up the battle for liberty and freedom.
