In active play, the pulled punch trains nothing, it is a boxers hand. It will never reach the target so it trains neither speed of attack nor timing in defense, in active play/sparring it is chasing flies. The controlled strike that can be released at filled strength and stopped at the split second before impact is the tool to be used. This skill dictates a higher level on both sides of the fist as if in defense you have not touched before it stops, you know you have been hit, in offense, if you cannot stop it in time and the defender must, or be hit, you know you have launched a strike that has no room for change should you need. Such a strike against a qualified opponent offers the opportunity to take advantage. How do you train this control ?
