In all negotiations aiming at solving a conflict, the very first - TopicsExpress

In all negotiations aiming at solving a conflict, the very first necessary step is to understand the background and the causes of the conflict. What the both sides of the negotiation table have to finally accept is the very simple fact that they can be wrong and they have done something (very) wrong to the other side. Without this basic acceptance, hardly any negotiation can go further. However, the mental state of so many Thai people who stick to self-righteousness (without ever considering that they might be wrong) and only think of alleging that they are always absolutely right (without ever thinking of compromising). Even when they come to a negotiation table, they are actually not ready to negotiate, but just to impose their demands on the other side(s). Addiction to information which suites ones political mentality and which incite certain political emotion (especially hatred) is yet another big obstacle. Here, people no longer regard those who are from the other side of conflict as human beings, but merely objects which can be damaged to the most lethal extent. Use of violence in any shape, as long as its used to enemies, is justifiable in every aspect. If Thailand is to perish, its not because of enemies from outside (as is widely believed) but by its own people. No outside enemy can do bigger harm than such mental attitude. Under the present circumstances, only Thai can ruin Thailand. One of the root causes of so many conflicts in Thailand is this mentality. As long as this attitude is not overcome, no fundamental solution can be found, and the same conflicts would emerge again in different shapes. Hope they learn lessons from history.
