In all the discussion after the Paris attacks, I cant stand all the white people comparing mockery of Islam to mocking Christianity or other dominant institutions, which they say theyd be fine with. It is easy to be irreverent when you have power. Just as it would have been worse than in bad taste to make racist cartoons about Jews in Nazi Europe, so is it utterly irresponsible and vile to make racist cartoons about Muslims at a time when the Muslim world is under attack. None of this excuses killing journalists *at all*, but as a brilliant caller said on the Diane Rehm Show this morning, getting enthusiastically self-righteous about free speech at the expense of the voiceless is a kind of fundamentalism too.
