In an area of the Atlantic that is currently barren of most - TopicsExpress

In an area of the Atlantic that is currently barren of most lifeforms, researchers were amazed to find DNA from 190 different single-celled organisms that lived 11,400-32,000 years ago buried in the sediment. Many of these species were previously unknown. Many of the species are part of lineages that do not form fossils, making the fact that they were found with DNA in tact enough to be analyzed that much more amazing. This newly discovered information may be used to correct gaps in the fossil record and give deeper insight into historical biodiversity in the ocean. More info: bit.ly/YwvrSH Photo credit: F.
