In an op-ed published in the Montreal Gazette, Irwin Cotler and Renee Maria Tremblay detail the continuing and severe state-sponsored persecution of the #Bahai community in #Iran, and note that the government of Iran, which is now undergoing Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of its human rights record at the United Nations Human Rights Council, has utterly failed to safeguard the rights of Baha’is, as it promised to do at its last UPR four years ago. Discussing Iran’s arbitrary arrest and detention of Baha’is, acute economic and social pressure on Baha’is, and official propaganda designed to incite hatred against Baha’is, Cotler and Tremblay state that the #UN “should hold the Iranian regime to account for its widespread and systematic violations of Iran’s own undertakings . . . to uphold the foundational principle of freedom of religion . . . and of its commitments to the international community.” Read the full piece here: montrealgazette/news/world/opinion-iran-should-stand-trial-for-persecution-of-bahai
