In an unprecedented move, the Ministry of Railways held a detailed consultation with representatives from the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Remote Sensing Centre, Indian Space Research Organisation, Indian Institutes of Technology, Bombay, Roorkee and Delhi. Recognising the potential role of science and technology in prevention of Railway Accidents as well as in other innovations useful to the Railways , the Minister of Railways, Shri Suresh Prabhu had directed that such consultations be held. Some areas which were mutually found worthy of consideration were bridge monitoring, conversion of plastics to fuel/bio fuel technology, use of geo spatial technology for mapping railway assets which can then be used for sounding alarms at unmanned level crossing gates, provision of expertise in composite material for reduction in weight of bio-toilets among other areas. DG/RDSO would be coordinating with the Department of Science and technology and the other institutions.
