In case you are unaware of this story, a happy healthy little 5 1/2 months old boy, died suddenly here in Ottawa, following a sudden and devastating diagnosis of cancer. This started to unfold just a few days before his parents’ scheduled wedding, turning what should have been the happiest day of their lives into one that one that will forever be a nightmare. As a fairly new mom, with a lot of friends with young families of their own, just the thought of this kind of tragedy striking is unimaginable and completely heartbreaking. Even though I do not know this couple, I feel the need to try and help them in any way I can. While tragedy and heartache are undeniably common in many situations, this one is especially touching. While no amount of money can ever compensate for this loss, I would like to do something to ease a tiny bit of the pain these parents must feel. With Christmas only a short 6 weeks away, I am sure that this will be a most difficult time for this couple. With constant reminders of Christmas everywhere you go; the malls playing Christmas music; the Christmas lights and snow in Canada; these will all be potent reminders of their baby’s first Christmas that should have been. My plan is to set up a “Travel Fund” in the names of these parents which could be used as a wedding gift from each and every person who donates to the cause. If this fund can be established quickly enough, it may be ideal timing to take them away from Christmas this year and let them heal a little. If, however, this is too soon for them to be away, we would naturally open the fund to permit them choose the time that best suits them.
