In case you thought a dysfunctional political system was the worst - TopicsExpress

In case you thought a dysfunctional political system was the worst news out of Israel this week, think again. The night before last, a two-hour leak in a pipeline carrying crude oil north from the port of Eilat -- caused by maintenance work -- has led to Israels worst ecological disaster ever.Three million cubic liters of the toxic gunk have spread over the sensitive Arava region, on the Jordanian border, endangering public health, flora and fauna, causing damage that wil take decades to repair. Ironic that this scary wake-up call about the dangers of fossil fuels should occur in Arava region, home to the Arava Power Company and Israels first commercial solar field. If fact, environmentalists from around the world will be driving past the spill on Sunday to attend the regionally important annual, and now exquisitely-timed Eilat-Eilot Conference on Renewable Energy. Companies, start-ups, researchers, and public-sector officials gather each year to bring us all closer to a future of clean renewables, and further from our fading and doomed reliance on the fuel created by our sun a billion years ago. Todays sun, we are witnessing more each day, will serve our energy needs just fine.
