In consideration of the death of Robin Williams, Id just like to - TopicsExpress

In consideration of the death of Robin Williams, Id just like to say something. Last night I was scrolling through all the posts about him and came across these disgusting pictures. For people that have bi-polar disorder, depression, schizophrenia, PTSD, anorexia and so on, talking about it is almost unbearable. More often than not, people that truly suffer from it suffer in silence due to the fear of what their friends and family will think. Theyre ashamed, hopeless, embarrassed and (for the most part) NOT the people posting things on social media about their self-harm and self-destructing behaviours. This is the kind of shit that pisses me off. All of these pictures contribute to the stigma attached to mental health and they are unbelievably offensive. Are you seriously using self-mutilation as a photo opportunity? You’re really asking strangers to like your photo to see how long you’re going to starve yourself? YOU are one of the reasons people think it’s a joke. Why are there almost 3 million pictures on Instagram with the hashtag “suicidal? There are such awful, graphic and hateful photos that Instagram has a warning when you search that hashtag. Opening up about the depth of their illness is terrifying. It’s not a joke. It’s not a platform for attention. It’s why they don’t seek help. It’s why some deaths caused by it are “unexpected” and “out of character. It’s why the stigma attached to mental illness needs to stop. Understand the difference between someone suffering from mental illness and someone simply suffering from a lack of likes and a spotlight. #itsnotachoice #stopthestigma letstalk.bell.ca/en/end-the-stigma/facts/
