In defense of Ruby Keeler, I think she did quite well in films--as well as could be with the kinds of roles that she was given. As she said to me, I wasnt trying to be Camille. She played the wide-eyed innocent because that was what she was supposed to be in the script. As for her dancing, I suspect most people who criticize her terpsichorean abilities have no skill at all in that line and probably dont know their left foot from their right. Among her actual peers in the field, I belive Ruby was respected for her talent as a dancer. Somewhere along the line, though, someone thought it cool or hip to criticize her negatively, and most just end up repeating what someone else said. Ruby made relatively few films and we have no idea what might have happened had a director like, say, Frank Capra decided to build her up as an actress. Nevertheless, she remains a cinematic immortal based on what she did accomplish--and thats a lot.
