In his post today at TomDispatch, Peter Van Buren explores how the tangle of watch lists that various agencies of the U.S. government keep actually work (or rather don’t work). In short, it’s not so hard to get on them, and essentially impossible to get off them. Trying to make sense of their labyrinthine reality makes Kafka look like a piker. This is a little classic of a piece which Van Buren ends this way: “The watch lists are there. The tools are in place. And one thing is clear: no one is guarding the guards. You never know whose name just went on a list. Maybe yours?”
