In honor of finals week, I thought Id share an essay I wrote when I was 12, trying to convince my parents to get me out of going to a school dance. (I hate dancing in public.) They still made me go. Here’s a typed up version, in case you can’t read my handwriting: Adria Olson 5-29-06 Writing Sixth Grade Social Why I feel I should not attend the Sixth Grade Social I, Adria Olson, feel that I should not attend the “Sixth Grade Social” for ample reasons. One of which is that I hate dancing. This equals a few hours wasted because of the lack of enjoyment to be had by myself. Secondly, I feel that the environment would be uncomfortable. I, personally, believe that sixth graders are not ready to have their own dance. Equally important, the time spent could be used doing other activities with other friends. Sleepovers, shopping, or a movie would be much more appropriate for girls my age to be spending their days going. Also, I could skip the dance and be performing other tasks that could be more useful than wasting gas for you to drive me to Edgemont. Cleaning my room, closet, or vacuuming would be much more worthwhile and helpful. Finally, I do not need to go to dances in order to meet other kids from different schools. If you are concerned about this, I vow to be outgoing and congenial to all unknown students yet to meet. All in all, I hope you will consider my thoughts, hopes, and opinions on this matter.
