In honor of the day: My family moved for a fortunately short time ( Sherry Wall Brunt, your wonderful family sent us off) to North Carolina in 1961. I was 9 then. Living in a time and place we did, Newport Beach, we had parents who only preached love and kindness. NC was a culture shock to my folks. One afternoon we went shopping, I had to use the restroom, I was confused because when I approached the ladies room, it said colored and there was another for white ladies. I went into the colored, as I was washing my hands a woman entered, she drew back in obvious concern. She asked, what are you doing here child. ..I said I had to wash my hands, she looked at me and said this room was for colored women, I said I know, because I had a yellow top on, I was colored and the other room said white ladies. She smiled and said, you arent from around here, are you, I said no Im from Newport Beach California. My mother came looking for me, concerned, the lady filled mom in on how it was done. My mother said she was so sorry, that it was a despicable rule, thanked her. we left and came back to Newport Beach within a week, our folks explained to us that no one has the right to treat anyone with such disrespect. We are all Americans, under a free flying flag. They would never allow us to think or hate that way. My Grandmother interviewed Dr. King for an article she turned in, she gave Dr. Kings autograph to a young black student who sold it to pay for college. I hope he found his dream.
