In indian cricket history we had great batsman like gavaskar, viswanath, vensakar who inspired and paved the way for new genaration great batsman like sachin, R dravid , vvs Laxman etc # we had great spinner like prassana, venkat, chandraShekar who had inspired and paved the way for spinner like kumble, harbhajan. # we had kapil dev who had inspired many young fast bowler. # But wicket keeper ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Any inspirational character? ? ? ? Wicket keeping is always considered as a job for what you dont get recognition and fame. People make bowlers and batsman as role model, hardly any wk. but no game of cricket can be played without wicket keeper , They are silent contributors. we had some good wk but none of them was big star and if u talk about wk- batsman we hardly have any good wk who can bat also (note- no wk has 5000 int runs except 1 man in indian cricket) The trade has changed by a young man from ranchi who has inspired millions to become like him and you can see the rate of taking wk- batting as career has increased by leaps and bounds. Its always a blessing if your wk is a good batsman. India got their first genuine match winner wk- batsman with over 12000 runs at age of 32 (many more to come) he is the 3rd all time run scorer wk. 90s was an era where we lost many close games from good situations. India was lacking a good finisher and then they found one of the greatest finisher. Now coming to keeping. with 550 plus dismissal he has the 4th most dismissal of all time. besides that his unbelieveable fast stumping ability and fast work close to stump is unique. Now coming to the terms of wk- batsman - captain. wk- batsman as captain is never encouraged in cricket. Many said that wk can never be a great captain. But that man has proved all wrong and beame one of the greatest and successful captain ever. He is the only wk- cap to lift the wc and many more records but i am not talking about records. i just want to make people understand the workload of a guy who keeps- bat- leads like a champ for day after day without showing weakness. World cricket may have better batsman, better wk and better cap but certainly not a guy who does the 3 job in same time better than him. !!!! Its hard to replace a guy who is equally capable in many aspect of the game like batting, keeping, captaincy, fitness, finishing plus add his calmness and true sportmanship in the field. But certainly has paved the may for many to fill his boots. You may love or hate but if you are sensible then you cant just deny the iron man of indian cricket. !!!!!
