In light of members’ ongoing interest in the Continued - TopicsExpress

In light of members’ ongoing interest in the Continued Professional Certification (CPC) program, the AANA Board is sometimes asked “who is putting pressure on us to prove our competence?” Numerous external forces continually question the competence of CRNAs, among them: our competitors and colleagues at the American Society of Anesthesiologists who also promote less qualified providers such as anesthesiologist assistants; state and federal regulators and policymakers, who routinely hear from anesthesiologists and their lobbyists trying to restrict CRNA practice by suggesting we are underqualified and therefore unsafe notwithstanding the mountain of evidence to the contrary; and the media, who don’t understand how nurses can be as qualified as physicians to give anesthesia safely, and therefore ask tough, probing questions about CRNA education and continuing education. Without question, it is the responsibility of each and every CRNA to ensure that we are prepared to practice to our full scope and as safely as possible in order to meet the needs and expectations of the patients we serve.
