In light of the CrossFit Games and the open coming up in 4 weeks; here is some light words. How to Be a Champion Definition of a champion is cham‱pi‱on ˈCHampēən/ noun 1. 1. a person who has defeated or surpassed all rivals in a competition, esp. in sports. a champion hurdler synonyms: winner, titleholder, defending champion, gold medalist, titlist, record holder; More 1 Decide to be a Champion. The first step in competition is to decide to compete and then commit to doing what it takes to win. You will not win if you dont believe in yourself. Your mind is powerful and will have an incredible impact on your performance. All champions have a will-do, can-do, winning attitudes, which contributes to winning, which contributes to confidence, which contributes to winning, and so on and so forth. Just make sure to not let that improved confidence turn into arrogance, this will lead to underestimating your opponents and losing your focus on working hard to be a champion. 2 Identify your strengths and weaknesses. Every athlete is different, some are naturally better at certain things than others. A champion knows what their gifts/strengths are and incorporates them and seeks to develop them. They also know their limitations/weaknesses and avoid being compromised by striving to make sure they improve that aspect of their game. If they can go no further with said limitations, they can help make up for it by improving on their strengths. An athlete who is not gifted with blazing speed can make up for it developing their technique; by increasing their agility, strength, movement; increase their mental understanding of their sport and of their opponent they face. 3 Discipline Yourself. A Champion creates the habit of winning. A person who wins a lot is often very good at self-discipline. They can develop a plan and follow it, and maintain motivation and will power. They often devote large amounts of time to improving themselves in relation to excellence at whatever they pursue. If you want to be a CrossFit Games Champion, study old games, watch strategies and practice against those times. If you want to be a champion softball player, work on your bat swing, practice your speed and agility in your front yard when you dont have anything better to do. If you want to be better at basketball, practice your ball-handling skills at home if you dont have access to a hoop, work on your vertical jumping ability and speed. If youre having trouble motivating yourself, reward yourself after each solid session. 4 Practice makes perfect. Oh, you never heard that before? Well, keep trying until you have reached the level you want to be at, and then keep working to maintain that level. Oh, yeah, you have to keep your game up after you get there. Repetitions become instinct or muscle memory. Nothing makes you better at doing something than by doing it often and letting yourself grow to meet whatever needs your pursuit may have. If youre not good at a certain area of whatever it is you want to be great at, commit as much time you can afford to practicing it, emphasizing form or technique. Use a Coach to help with your training and to help you focus on the fixes and not waste time. The more you do something the right way when practicing, the better you get at it. Nothing worse than practicing something incorrectly and then have to retrain; that sucks! When youre tired, or caught off guard, youll naturally fall upon your practice to get through whatever trials and tribulations you face. 5 Dont get disheartened when you lose. If you keep focused and working hard your time will come. Nothing sucks worse than losing, so fear of losing or resent of past losses should motivate you to go the extra mile in your training. Also, never back-off of competing/playing against someone(s) who are the best at their game; you may lose, but if willing you will learn more than you thought possible in the loss. 6 When you do win, congratulate other participants. Remember, if you did not have someone competing against you; there can be no excitement of competition. No one likes a bad winner or a bad loser! Also important to remember, winning is not the end of it, unless you dont intend to keep doing whatever it is you have become a champion at. Keep yourself working to improve yourself, or your competition will reach and surpass you. 7 MOST IMPORTANTLY, HAVE FUN! For most of us, your sport is not a job! Even at the highest levels, if you are not enjoying what you’re doing, you may be asking why you’re doing it. Losing sucks, but if you sacrifice what makes you enjoy doing something just to be good at it, theres not much of a point to it anymore, unless youre doing it for a living...Then youve gotta grind it out or find a new profession.
