In many cases it is just one word, just a word that decides all. I went to this local workshop to have my car checked prior to a long ride. I have been there before, the guy there is elder bloke which is always better here in Thailand. Now that I tell to myself that I actually speak some Thai, I proudly explained to him what I need. Prooni puakrao pai ti Chiang Mai, I said, tomorrow we go to Chiang Mai. Pom ao... (I want).. then I realised that I have no idea how to say in Thai about pressure in tires, water to clean windows etc.. Pom ao, I said much less sure, kun... kap rot dee, tookien (I want you ..drive car well, everything). Khoon ko chai? (You understand?) The bloke looked at me for a sec, but then smiled and said ok, ok. He took the car keys. But instead of doing anything with car, he sat himself behind the wheel, and invited me in to the pax seat with a wide Thai smile. I was not sure what to do. I got inside. We drove out to the road when hell began. He drove my poor little Honda Freed to 160 km/h, then he would break hard. He went between those two reekshas so close that they nearly fell down of horror. He made a slalom ride between between huge lorries, at the speed well over 120 km/h... I was bolting in the car like a fish in the net. I tried to stop this madness but forgot all Thai of sheer horror. Besides dee mak (very well). I clinged on to the safety belt with both hands and kept shouting out dee mak dee mak (very very good). Which made him drive even faster. In some ten minutes which seemed an eternity to me we were back tp his garage. Pom kap dee mak (I drive very good), he said. I could not smile back, I was still shaking. T-t-tao r-r-rai (how much), I asked with dry lips.. Mai mee arai, mai pen rai krap (Nothing, no problem), he answered, pom chop kap rot kon khoon kraap (I liked to drive your car). Tae khoon ao check check tookien? (But you want to check everything?). Pom dai kruup (I can do it).
