In many cities where Uber operates, it has faced quite understandable opposition from taxi operators and other affected interests. Obviously the two are not competing on even ground as taxi operators are required to licensed and pay related fees. Does this matter (given Uber tries to classify itself as a ride-sharing service, rather than a transportation provider)? I often find taxi trips rather unpleasant, find that cabbies drive rather poorly/dangerously/carelessly and that registration/licensing doesnt seem to have a real impact on these behaviours. On the other hand (and I know these are anecdotal observations with a tiny sample), Ive felt more comfortable and safe in the Uber cars Ive taken.
