In my Indian class this morning, during the class discussion, one student raised a very interesting question. Let me put her question in my own language. professor, you said earlier that India is the largest democracy in the world and its actively practicing democracy. But this morning i read an article before come to class. its from Hindu, your favorite source on India. it says that millions of Indians have toilet problems. isnt weird democratic country failed to provide toilets to people i thought she had a good point. But as we know, democracies dont anyway mean that youre getting better toilets and food and peace. Then i brought the class attention to rising inequality and racism against blacks in the US. The point was that Indias problems related to toilets no better than Americas difficult journey on inequality and racism. Both India and the U.S. claim theyre practicing democracy, but data suggest that both countries miserably failed significant portion of their own masses. But i love the question from my student related to toilets in India. The reality is that more than half of 1.2 billion people in India live without toilets. Hope the current regime in New Delhi do more to build toilets .
