In my first ITI I made it into Rohn sick, cold, nearly broken, and promptly had a mini-meltdown. Rob helped coax me through it while getting me fed and into a sleeping bag. My condition that year became a running joke with us and every year since then when Id arrive in Rohn Rob would say something like You seem like youre doing a little better than the first time I saw you here. And wed laugh about what a trainwreck I was that first year. In 2009 a group of us got caught in a storm in Rainy Pass. I made it into Rohn 60 hours after Id left Puntilla Lake; about 35 miles away. It had been a long trek through the pass and I sort of knew that people would be wondering what the hell had happened to us. As I was headed into Rohn on the Tatina River I ran into Rob headed out to look for us on a snowmachine. He jumped off the machine, gave me a big hug, and told me how glad he was to see me. It was impossible not to notice the relief on his face. It really struck a nerve with me how much Rob really cared about us ITI racers. He was out there because he loved being *out there*. But he was also the perfect guy to be out there...tough as nails, competent as hell, and helping people however he could. Giving way more to us than any of us could ever give back to him. Rohn is among the many places that will not be the same. You will be missed dearly my friend. adn/article/20140811/competitor-dies-grueling-alaska-backcountry-race
