In my generation, among peers of relatively well-off families, we were often told to pursue our dreams. It was pretty optimistic, simply put. Even more so for those with dreams that were vague or uncertain. By the time I fully applied the think like an optimist, act like a realist paradigm, I was fully committed to something I really could not see myself in for the rest of my life. I didnt even have a grasp of what I wanted to do. Maybe I was naively hopeful then that I would be happy to apply what I learned at a job. But here I am, two degrees later faced with this open world once more. I realized that I need to avoid finding something to fill in the gaps for the sake of passing time, and think more about I should do what I have to do, so I can get me to where I want to be. The sheltered lives I - and Im starting to realize, others in my batch - are acquainted with idealized so much, until you finally get to this point and see the world in this really strange position. Technically, were not rich. Our parents or our guardians are. And everything we want to do uses their money. But what if we do not have their money anymore? Thankful as I am for a well-off family and parents who are willing to pay for just about everything essential for me, I cannot, do not and will not rely on them forever. A very wise man told me that he gave up his dream of being an astronomer to pursue a realistic goal, and that got him into a well paying job. He can always read about it online. Maybe I should do the same. I want to be rich (who doesnt?) and when I do, I want to devote my time and money to meeting and helping others. But right now, Im poor. Maybe even worse off than those whove been in the real world longer than Ive been. Maybe better because I have a shiny paper from a shiny school. Whats important is that I realize these facts. I took an 8 month break after graduating high school, and that did me a lot of good in setting my course. I need to do something similar, and I can set course for a future I want to have.
