In my opinion…. Language is one of the aspects of our culture. The main purpose of language is to communicate. The communication starts as soon as the child is born. The very first attempt of communication is by crying when he is hungry. The gentle touch of his mother gives him warmth and sense of security. Language comes at last when child starts understanding meanings of words and his need to know different words. Communication itself has different shades. The homely communication child has with his parents. Language is not being taught but to be caught. Child does it very well and picks up his parents language. Social communication starts with neighbors, with friends in school etc. India is multi-linguistic country. In today’s context we can’t choose only Marathi neighbors and friends. Its just impossible. Then why child should learn only in Marathi medium school? Don’t we want communication with Non-Marathi people? Do you really expect all non-marathis should first learn Marathi and then we shall start communicating with them? Are we strictly not going to migrate outside Maharashtra and outside India? In that case how are we going to communicate? What if child takes education in Marathi school and his father gets transferred outside Maharashtra? In that case what child is supposed to do? What if any foreigner visits your house, will you tell him to learn Marathi first??? The professional communication is better only in English as of now. All professional courses including law are being taught in English. We have no alternative Marathi vocabulary for all scientific words. Even if we have, doctors, scientists, businessmen, industrialists, lawyers can stick to Marathi language but they have to speak in English. I don’t see any point in being so adamant. But one should learn many languages. Knowledge increases by sharing…. Is it only school’s responsibility to preserve our language? Schools give us formal education in Maths Science, geography. I don’t see any point learning these subjects in Marathi. How long we shall have this “Mee Marathi” “Mee Marathi” attitude? Don’t we believe in National integrity? “Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam” is also our culture? Why are we ignoring it?
