In my parents day there had always seemed to have been listening booths in record shops. At some point, probably during the 1970s, they went out of fashion. With the Acid House explosion of the late 80s some of the busier shops would operate like clubs with staff constantly mixing and customers having to shout out when they heard something they liked. For a young teenager, independent record shops were daunting places, you had to ask to hear the records, then make a decision under pressure whether you wanted it or not, if you said no more than a few times you were deemed a time waster and basically ignored. I always thought that booths were a great idea both for the customer who could listen to music without pressure and for the staff who didnt go mad having to listen to a record like Chocolate Boy fifty times a day. After buying my partner out in 1996, the first thing I did was to do away with the Drum and Bass section on the 1st floor and instead installed 3 listening booths. Initially we used old car seats, they worked well but a couple of years later we installed 5 booths which worked brilliantly and I think the customers really liked.
