In my readings on facebook during the past few days, Im seeing a good many people talking about their past, or about the past - as if it were magical, as if it were one specific thing and no other thing or any other way. Their past has been set in stone and memorialized, in their minds. Most of the people writing like this were privileged from the moment they entered this earth. They are among the ones whose forebears provided for them to go places, to do things, to enjoy pleasures and freedoms not as widely available to the world at large as they themselves seem to believe - as they revolve in their circle of acquaintances who all had the same experiences, the same background. They look to the past and insist. They look to the past and chew and savor. They do not, often, look to the future. Nor do they aim at creation - instead, they aim at definition and insist on small points being correct in ways they want them to be correct. The future does not care about definition, nor does it care about small points being correct based on one or another persons idea of what life should be. The future is a high wind, it always has been, it wont stop to raise its hat to nod at you politely or to put the dot on the i or to remember what or who you were, back then. The future is wide open. The future is a miracle, unless youre looking back and adjusting your girdle or the knot on your tie. Those who can create, and those who can keep their minds open and ready will join it. Otherwise, its just a compost heap.
