In my statement to the House of Commons on September 16th, I called on the government to re-assert its responsibility by renewing the CMHC mortgage agreements and continuing to provide rent geared to income subsidies for co-ops. Seniors who have lived in co-ops for years, paying market rents, who have invested volunteers hours building these communities, who depend on rent subsidies as they hit retirement age and go on fixed incomes; these seniors now risk being evicted because the subsidy programme is disappearing.
