In my vast array of studies, being the eclectic autodidact that I am, Ive put much time into researching things such as Hypnosis. Youd be surprised to find that many people are capable of being hypnotised, or are open to the power of suggestion. You can see this in everyday advertizing. Look at how the advertisers talk about how the product will make you feel, rather than what the product really is or how it functions. Edward Bernays, the son in law of Sigmund Freud, was the first to use mass hypnosis as a promotion of capitalism and is the father of modern propaganda i.e. mass marketing. Much of the modern Psychology of our times was the result of people like Bernays and Freud using whatever methods available to control the human mind, including chemicals, electrocution, cold water torture (water boarding is not a new tactic) and even lobotomies. Many of these techniques are still in practice today. One of the most interesting facts about hypnosis, is that you cant make someone do anything they wouldnt normally do when otherwise conscious of their behaviour, unless you can instill that type of behaviour before subjecting that person to hypnosis. A case in point was when I was in High School. I had a friend that was studying for his Nursing degree, but as all young people are to want, he didnt want to spend all his time studying. So I suggested hypnosis as a method of recording the needed information in the shortest amount of time. I would place him into the hypnotic state, then have him go over all the information he needed to study. I would then quiz him under hypnosis and then revive him and go over the information again to see if it took. On every occasion we did this, he never scored less than a 92% on any of his tests. When we didnt perform the hypnosis study period, his scores were significantly lower. On one occasion, I suggested while he was under hypnosis, that he would be inclined to give me some of his pot for my time and contribution towards his education. I was very interested to see if this suggestion would take as I knew my friend to be quite stingy with his herb. Upon reviving him within a few minutes after testing him, he retrieved his stash and offered me a nice tasty looking bud, but before placing it into my hand, he stopped, gave me a very suspicious look and demanded to know if I had put him up to offer that nice little nug. Being the honest sort (even then) I told him yes, but that I was still deserving of that payment for my assistance. He was inclined to disagree, and I left without any bud for my troubles. I never offered to study with him after that, knowing that even subconsciously he didnt appreciate what I was doing for him. That is the rub of even mass hypnosis, the unwillingness to be controlled or made to do something you normally wouldnt do. It is a very hard mental process to overcome... unless youve diminished the will of that person or made the act youre desiring acceptable to the participant, even if it is unknowingly placed within the mind of that person. You can then exert your will upon another, but first you must make that thought acceptable, even if from a distance. An example would be the amount of violence we are inundated with on a daily basis via film, TV, sports and the news. The horrific scenes we see displayed are mostly fictitious but are regarded as factual by the subconscious. This creates a schism in the mind that one has to reconcile the two competing thoughts; the one that knows the fiction and the one that still reacts to something abhorrent or disdainful. The conflict is typically resolved by flagrantly accepting the fiction and disregarding the reality (known as the path of least resistance). The by product of this is the desensitizing of the mind to those images that would otherwise be too disdainful to take in, still the subconscious mind will react in the only way it knows how, honestly. The results of this conflict are the reactions of that mind trying to reconcile those two competing thoughts, they manifest as addictions or other types of mental distress, like depression or PTSD, but all reactions are the same; a disconjointed mind not able to rightfully appraise or assess the reality of the experience. We think nothing of the gore in a movie like Full Metal Jacket but if confronted with the actual violence of war, the observer would be most distressed due to the inability of creating a fiction to superimpose upon that experience. That doesnt hold true for all individuals, as I have known Veterans of Foreign wars who enjoyed and even reveled in their actions. They were of that mindset that was okay with the image or action of war, long before having to confront it. Just like with hypnosis, there are some minds that dont have that filter of empathy. But are they open to suggestion on a subconscious level? Perhaps, but that is a conversation for another time. The point I am trying to convey with this dialog is that you may be going about your activities without a true understanding of why. Our modern day culture is rife with subliminal messages and intense forms of thought control. Every commercial you see is indicative of this fact, every item you are infatuated with, is the result of a taught or manipulated behaviour. Most of us are so conditioned we dont even know the reason we support a certain football team or wish to own a specific kind of car. Most go about their daily affairs without even questioning why we would go to a job we hate, to spend a third of our lives making someone else rich. The truth is right there, but most would rather accept the fiction. When you hear about people awakening, that is precisely what is taking place. The mind rejects the illusion, the fiction and resists anything but what can be deemed as truth, or that which is self evident and once awakened, it is near impossible to render it again to that unconscious state. I myself have never been hypnotized, though I practice self hypnosis (actually nothing more than deep meditation) I have found it very easy to hypnotise most others. I think this is due to my inability to be open to suggestions that conflict with my perception of reality. Im not at all sure why others can be so easily given over to the power of suggestion but I can show you a little test to see if youre capable of being hypnotised. Take your right index finger and place it into the palm of your left hand, then squeeze your index finger with all your might. Do this for thirty seconds. After the 30 seconds release your index finger and try and open your left hand. If you are not able to open it quickly and encounter resistance, likely you are a good candidate for hypnosis, but not for the reason you might think. Your ability to be hypnotised or your openness to suggestibility isnt in the result of your hand opening slowly, but your willingness to follow instructions without questioning the Why before hand. Kinda makes ya think, dont it?
