In order to derive sunnat (the permanent and life long way of the Holy Prophet saaw), one has to keep in view the following things, besides sahih hadith. 1. To look at all sahih ahadith from various books of ahadith, and not relying on the books that we know only. 2. To see what sahaba understood and practiced in this particular issue. This is called asar-e-sahabah. 3. To see whether Holy prophet saaw did it for some particular time, place and reason or it was the permanent and consistent action of the prophet. It makes is fardh, wajib, sunnat and mustahab. Some people consider sahih hadith as enough and only source to know the sunnat of the prophet saaw which is sometimes misguiding. Saying prayer with bare head is one example.
