In our journey of #LivingPoetry over the past one year, we met wonderful souls, grateful and nostalgic-we take a moment to say, Your presence means a lot to us - we hope to make more memories with you. Truly, youre special!! Heres a beautiful version of Tejimolas state, by Rini Barman.. (a memorable excerpt) Drinking Tejimola The mask of Tejimola’s tear Falls in a cup of garden tea, Its tip has traces of fast wheels, Wounded by the speeding trains, the ones that delve into dried plaits of her childhood, Ones that leave forgiven tales and the tellers inseparable, Tejimola ! Tejimola was her name, “But , I am still Tejimola, Don’t pluck my gourd, boatman ..!” Nomenclatures of fiction then too, Were crafty card-games; She breathes in , the sprouts of disabled bamboo grooves Life quivers everyday as Clarrissa’s ecstasy : “ Fear no more the heat o’ the sun, Nor the furious winter’s rages” Away from cicadas of native smoke, She survives many such stories.. The aroma of dull areca palms Blown at the peak of phalguna’s monstrosities Is mixed with red-turquoise Headlines in national dailies: blood looks brighter when dipped in ink , (Purple was the colour of her secret-garment), “One is not born, One becomes a woman ..” Do you call daughters, ‘tropical spongy hyacinths’? The monsoon before it falls , descend along the tributary as her bedrock, “ I am only Tejiimola, My lotuses wail in red, blue and pink Between the yarns of muga silk , My stepmother pounded me..” Her spirits in the stubborn crystals of sugar Refuse to settle at the bottom, Everybody is fond of decorous tea leaves, (Her step-mother now has a million faces They still camouflage her with bitter lemons, And choke her clamour with proportion ) Can you name this swollen horror , This ecstasy coiled in , Tejimola, Tejimola was her name! Tejimola loves to float in waters Those very waters Her deodhani hairs were thrusted in, You cannot cage her still, The Luit resurrects her in fragments… For all of us, some context - :) Tejimola , literally “ a spirited vessel” is perhaps the most famous female character among Lakhsminath Bezbarua’s collection of Assamese Folktales. Narrated poignantly in every version , Tejimola’s evil stepmother kills her in a fit of jealousy while her father is away . However she is reborn in various forms despite her stepmother’s efforts to crush her forever. Although most versions of the tale end with her happy marriage , this comic resolution has often invited severe critical reception from academicians and filmmakers . Hats off to the expression! Lets weave some more poetry-magic at - PACH birthday bash 13th July, 12pm onwards at WoodBox Cafe, Satya Niketan. Opposite Venkateshwar College. Come on people, lets sing the birthday song!
