In our own American story consider how the 19th Century could have - TopicsExpress

In our own American story consider how the 19th Century could have gone differently. Instead of abolition of slavery, how about it we had taxed, licensed, regulated and legislated slavery? For example, more safety regulations, a 50 hour slave work week, visiting rights for slaves to see members of their own families from time to time? Federal Health Clincs for slaves to have whip wounds treated, and shackle abrasions medicated? We could have preserved the legal rights of owners to abort slaves--"every slave a wanted slave" could have become lyrics to a pop song by Robert Foster, but we also could have made the experience of being a slave more humane thanks to government slave quarter inspections to check for roaches and vermin. Problem is some things are right and some things, no matter how regulated, are plain wrong.
