In past years, Republicans and Democrats have used lame ducks to pass massive omnibus spending bills, bailouts for the auto industry and the Postal Service, debt limit increases, welfare expansions, and the new START Treaty with Russia. And who can forget the so-called “fiscal cliff” tax deal that Mitch McConnell (R-KY) cut with Joe Biden that raised taxes on 80% of Americans? To be clear, lame ducks are not used by one party against another; theyre used by both parties against the American people. This year, it will be just as bad if not worse. Congress could use the lame duck to increase spending, extend the Export-Import Bank corporate welfare program, create a new Internet tax, ratify the United Nations Treaty on Disabilities, and even pass amnesty. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other special interests have spent tens of million of dollars helping the GOP establishment defeat conservatives this year, and they want the favor returned.
