In preparation for our metabolic Lifestyle University programs weekly class topic on FATS – the question is: Is butter is back? Nope! Really good link included below as well but heres the upshot: butter is a refined fat (which is not a good thing) that is high in saturated fat; margarines many years ago USED to be worse (made with high trans fat) than butter but now, on average, are less bad than butter (trans fat virtually gone and they are significantly lower in saturated fat than butter, esp light margarines). BUT both butter and margarines are refined fats. So, therefore both are suboptimal forms of fat versus whole high fat foods like whole nuts and seeds. And when it comes to modern margarines versus butter, butter is definitely a higher risk form of refined, high calorie density fat than margarines. Better than butter (or should I say less bad than butter or regular margarines) are light margarines. But – the truth is that with all of these, significant portion control is required! Why? Because calorie overload is quite easily possible with either butter or margarine due to their very high calorie density! And THAT is where #RealtyMeetsScience TM #RMS
