In promising regional news, Tunisia has become the first state in the Middle East- North Africa zone to lift restrictions and endorse the UN treaty against discrimination of women. In the past, Tunisia had taken issue with specific sections of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The state specifically opposed sections regarding womens rights within the family, including marriage, divorce and property rights. The newly adopted Tunisian Constitution is also a hopeful sign for womens rights activists. The new constitution includes sections which expressly protect womens rights and committing to gender parity.
