In reading this article, it is important to keep in mind that while these may be Obama-era developments, they do not actually have anything to do with President Obama. On health care, the only difference between Obama and every other recent Democratic president (and some of the Republican ones, like Nixon) is that under Obama, something actually happened on the subject of health care. Yet Obama himself had little to do with it; rather, it came about because the Democrats temporarily ended up with 60 votes in the Senate at the same time they controlled the House and the presidency. Obama may have been a critical element but he didnt make it happen, as one might reasonably say about LBJ and the Civil Rights Act. And, its worth remembering that Obamas plan is significanly more conservative than the one backed by President Clinton. Meanwhile, on the stimulus, this was a reaction to an unprecedented economic event and it is likely that pretty much any President who didnt want to be Herbert Hoover would have done something along the same lines. This includes Republican presidents, who probably would have insisted on something putting a greater emphasis on tax reductions or rebates, but who would have thrown the budget similarly out of whack. washingtonpost/blogs/the-fix/wp/2014/06/16/understanding-the-obama-republican-party/
