In recent centuries, apparitions of Mary reported at Lourdes (1859) in France, Knock (1879) in Ireland, Fatima (1917) in Portugal and other places created widespread interest among Catholics throughout the world. Mary appearing to people who were mostly uneducated, often only children, called for worldwide repentance and a renewal of faith in her Son. Many ordinary people suffering from poverty created by the Industrial Revolution and the destructiveness of modern warfare saw these apparitions of Mary as a sign from Heaven that God still cared for his people. Miracles of healing were reported at these shrines, which became new popular centers of devotion to the Mother of God. Traditional Marian shrines such as Guadalupe in Mexico and Our Lady of Czestochowa in Poland continued to be rallying places and centers of spiritual, cultural and political influence in the nations and among their people.
