784 Carp, 268 Trout units established; annual fish production reaches 20,000 tons Dr Manohar for framing long, short term plans SRINAGAR, JULY 7: Fisheries Department has generated revenue of Rs. 78 lakh during first two month of current financial year while five hatcheries with seasonal production capacity of 2.50 lakh fingerlings each have been completed and made operational in Kashmir Valley. This information was given to the Minister of State for Fisheries, Cooperatives, Finance and Planning Dr Manohar Lal Sharma while reviewing the physical and financial achievement registered by the Department. The Minister asked the authorities of the Department to frame short and long term plans in order to expand the activities of the Department. He said that fisheries sector has vast potential of employment generation and asked the officers to redouble their efforts in their respective areas and motivate people, particularly educated youth and farmers, for establishing fish units. He said this will go a long way in increasing fish production in the State besides meeting the local demands. Emphasizing on awareness, the Minister asked for launching a massive awareness campaign among the people about the State and Centrally sponsored schemes, introduced in the fisheries sector, and the financial incentives attached with them, so that maximum person are brought under the ambit of these schemes. He asked the officers to take necessary measures for bridging the gap between demand and supply. He said that consumption of animal protein including fish is increasing day by day, adding that the need is to find out alternate ways for meeting the public demands by way of increasing fish production in the State. He asked them to make necessary entries of the assets of the Department in the revenue records to secure them from any encroachment. He also instructed for carrying out necessary renovation of the buildings to make them presentable. The Minister said that every year tens of thousand tourists, domestic as well as foreign, visit Valley and underlined need for establishing Aquarium cum Awareness Centre at Srinagar on the pattern of Bahu Fort Jammu. The meeting was told that 14000 fishermen families are registered with the Department while financial assistance for construction of low cost houses has been extended to 1587 such families so far. It was given out that fish production in the State has reached to about 20 thousand tones against annual consumption of 25 thousand tons. The Department has established 784 Carp and 268 Trout units so far in the State. Director Fisheries, R. K. Dogra, Joint Director Fisheries, Kashmir Mr. R. K. Pandita, head of engineering wing Mohammad Shaban besides district officers of Anantang, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian were present on the occasion.
