In relation to my blog post from this morning: It may also need to be said that willingly submitting to someone elses authority is not the same as trading in your autonomy. I mean it could be, if your boundaries suck, but it certainly doesnt have to be. The submission to authority for initiation is just part of the agreement. You hold trust for those doing the initiation, enough trust to go through that ordeal with them taking control of the container and manipulating it appropriately and with Love. You (autonomy) guide all of the inner work that happens, how far it goes (though they are there to pull you back if some part seems too shiny to leave) and all that jazz, but it starts with trusting someone enough to hold that authority and submit to their process. Hhhmmm ... I think people confuse authority with power over as if the two are interchangeable. (Authority can be a power-over situation, it just is not automatic.) I know lots of folks I hold as an authority in their field of expertise and they are who I would go to for input. The areas of their authority range from photography, to permaculture, to herbs (certified medicinal herbalists) to writing, etc. They have no issue with considering themselves an authority figure in those areas, nor do I. So I think the crux of it for me is all the layers that authority and submission can cover.
