In response to Kathie Yelavich Hetherington question: Te Ahu Centre in Kaitaia has a magnificent Dalmatian Pou, along with Five Maori Pous representing the 5 tribes of the Far North and a European Pou depicting the Whalers then Missionaries coming to this country with the their tales establishing them selves. Also Percy Rakich expressed an interest in the fabulous floor created by craftsman Richard Murray. So here are a few more pictures. Along with an explanation of what is depicted on the Dalmatian Pou. Here is an outline of what is depicted on it:- The Biakovo Mountain Range in Dalmacija A typical home of our immigrants in their homeland Ships and boats that plyed and now ply the Adriatic A coastal village Steeple and Bell tower in the town of Split Monk playing a Gusla A Tamburica player with his instrument Kolo Dancers A Dalmatian waiting on the wharf looking across the Adriatic at a ship coming to pick him up for his journey to New Zealand Gum diggers working with spade spear and hand pump A digger posing with his camp oven and the bread he has just baked A gum digger at work on his Hurday Gurdy (Borumina) Two dwellings, one of nikau and the other of gum sacks like a tent with its mud chimney and a lady and child pondering what they left behind. A gum sieve leans against the wall of the hut A traditional lamb on the spit Gum sacks being sewn up ready for transport A wagon load of gum in sacks off to the ship bound for Auckland — The wine industry is recognized as is the Fishing industry and the farming sector The business and professional has not been forgotten A kauri tree with a digger climbing to collect bled gum Recognition of Maori relationship with Dalmatians Sport e.g. rugby, tennis and bowls Holding up the above history is a Gum Digger with a Pikau of gum on his back, a bucket, Gum spear, axe and spade over his shoulder, wearing his wellingtons and in his right hand the treasured billy in which he made his tea. This figure stands approximately six feet tall. A grapevine is strategically entwined from the top to the bottom of the Pou featuring bunches of grapes.
