In response to a post elsewhere, I thought Id share only one of Jonathan Friedmans many interesting insights on the evolution of culture. In this video, he places globalization within this context. If I understand one of his theories correctly, hes hypothesized a cyclical process that plays itself out regardless of how we, as a species, feel about it. A component of this process seems to be a teleological strategy that weve devised as a way of trying to understand, and accept, our underlying unconscious and instinctive need to destroy ourselves. Religion occupies this niche nicely because it prophesies a triumphant resurrection following the catastrophic end that ultimately awaits us. If this theory is true, the obsession with our need, as a species, for religions to provide an acceptable context -- and explanation -- for our self-destructive impulses makes sense, at least to me. :) youtu.be/mlUu2p8LKGo
