In response to the recent anti-Semitic acts around the world... Ive read about the Holocaust my entire literary life. Living in the United States, even as a young Jewish girl, it was hard for me to envision the horrific nature of humans to turn against each other in such a drastic and violent way. It wasnt until I visited Auschwitz and Birkenau that I started to gain a perspective on the terrors of the past. But it was still just that to me - the past. As most of you know, I moved to the UK in September of this past year. One of the biggest differences here, and in most European countries, is that the Holocaust is treated as a recent event, as it should be. Its been 70 years. You most likely know at least one person who is older than that. Unfortunately, there are very few Holocaust survivors still living in the world. In the near future, there will be none left. The torch will soon be passed to us to tell their stories. It is not a task for just the Jewish or oppressed people of the world. It is a job that we ALL need to fulfill in order to keep these terrors from repeating themselves. Its time to be kind to one another and stand up for those being put down. In the words of William Faulkner, “The past is not dead. In fact, its not even past.”
