In sociological literture as well as in popular usage, the term “community” is often used to refer to an ideal-typical village, where the five basic dimensions are closely interlinked and mutually reinforcing, resulting in a highly integrated community. The ideal-typical image characterises the village as a small, isolated community with a homogeneous population. The economy is self-sufficient; social life is harmonious; human relationships are intimate; and the population shares a high value consensus as well a a strong sense of belonging. Whether the “idyllic” village community exists or ever existed is open to question, but this image of community has led to popular beliefs that “the community is lost” in the modern, industrial-urban setting, and that efforts must be made to revitalise it. - Wong et. al., Dimensions of HDB Community.
