In the 4th grade, I had to memorize a poem titled "In Flanders Fields". It was written in 1918 by a Canadian Army officer as a way to memorialize the WWI dead buried in France. As with many things learned at a young age, I carry this poem in my head, and think of it whenever I see a Veterans Cemetery. Last week, prior to our visit to the Normandy Beaches and Cemeteries, the crew from our ship, the AmaLegro, gave each cabin a lovely copy of this poem. It was a very poignant time for us all. "If ye break faith with us who die we shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders Fields."
